Electric vehicles come in many forms – battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and hybrid electric. Each type functions a little differently and offers different benefits and challenges.

Battery electric vehicles are powered solely from electricity stored in a battery pack, which requires charging from an external power supply.


  • - Have zero tailpipe emissions, though emissions may occur during production
  • - Deliver a significantly higher percentage of their fuel energy to the wheels, making them more efficient
  • - Run smoothly and quietly
  • - More expensive than comparable conventional vehicles, but provide savings in annual fuel and maintenance costs
  • - Most battery electric vehicles have 200+ miles of range on a single charge, though cold weather reduces driving range due to the increased use of the cabin heater

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are powered by a conventional gasoline/diesel engine and an onboard battery, which requires charging from an external power supply.


  • - The battery is additionally charged by the running engine and the regenerative braking system
  • - Have reduced tailpipe emissions compared to conventional vehicles
  • - Prioritize the use of the electric range first, around 20-40 miles per full charge

Hybrid electric vehicles use an onboard battery alongside an internal combustion engine.


  • - The battery is charged by the running engine and the regenerative braking system
  • - The battery is used to provide instantaneous power
  • - Have reduced tailpipe emissions compared to conventional vehicles, but not as substantial as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
